Get in the Right Mindset
Before I dive into the 5 barriers, you need to make sure you are in the right frame of mind when you get out there and start networking. The Universe will give you what you put out. Therefore, go in knowing you are doing exactly what you should be doing and anticipate great results.
The 5 Networking Barriers
1 – Time spent networking is time spent away from your business
Yes, if you are the sole provider for billable hours, then this will take away from that time. However, that may not be the best set up for your business to be successful. Check out Making Money is Killing Your Business by Chuck Blakeman to learn on how to shift your priorities.
2 – Networking can be expensive
Yes, some events may have a fee, but you can also find many that are free too. Be sure to think of any costs as you would any other advertising expense. What is the ROI from your attendance?
3 – What if you are an introvert?
The mere thought of networking could cause some people to never even attempt attending an event. If that sounds like you, then you may want to see if there is someone in your community that can help you with that.
A dear friend of mine, Nancy Chin-Wagner here in Boulder, has a whole consulting business on networking. And she has special one on one consulting services that are all about helping introverts network.
So do a Google search for your area and see if there is any local help if this is a barrier for you when it comes to networking.
4 – You don’t know where to start
You may want to start by finding out where your ideal client is going. And if you need to do work on creating your Client Persona, then I recommend you check out an episode we did earlier this year that goes over that: #3 Creating a Client Persona.
You can also find events on these platforms:
5 – It cuts into family time
If this is a deal breaker for you, then see if you can find events that take place during the day when you may already have childcare/school for your young children for instance.
If you are in the Denver/Boulder area and would like to check out my networking group, The Referral Partnership, we’d love to have you as a guest!
